The person
He was raised in Nashik and studied Karmakanda at the Trimbakeshwar pathashala, then worked for nine years as an assistant on the long Narayan Nagbali and Tripindi sequences before conducting them himself. Twenty-six years on, most of his calendar is remembrance and dosha shanti work at Trimbakeshwar, where the rites run across two or three mornings and cannot be shortened. He briefs families the evening before in Marathi or Kannada, writes out the gotra and the three generations of names himself, and reads them back for correction. He is careful to describe a dosha as a classification found in the kundli and the traditional rite prescribed for it, and nothing more than that.

The school a pandit belongs to and the shakha he was trained in decide the order of the vidhi and the sound of the recitation. Both are stated rather than assumed.

His adhyayana in the Shakala shakha was confirmed by his acharya at the Trimbakeshwar pathashala, and a Dvaita matha in Nashik confirmed the guru-parampara he names in the Uttaradi line.

He recited the Narayan Nagbali sankalp and the Tripindi Shraddha sequence in full before a three-member review panel, which assessed svara, pada-paatha and the day-by-day ordering of the vidhi.

He completed a recorded rehearsal from the Kushavarta kund area: a tripod-mounted wide angle, a handheld close angle carried by his assistant, and an uplink measured at 5 Mbps sustained over ninety minutes.

A nine-square vedi is laid in coloured grain, each graha is invoked in its own place, and the ahuti are offered with the nine prescribed woods — arka for Surya through kusha for Ketu.

The thousand names of Vishnu from the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata, recited with tulsi archana on Ekadashi and Saturdays.

The rite kept for a departed parent or elder on the tithi of their passing — pind daan, tarpan of water and black til, and a meal offered in their name.

कालसर्पदोषनिवारणम्
The observance kept when every graha falls on one side of the Rahu and Ketu axis. Nag puja, Rudrabhishek and the Sarpa Sukta are its three parts.
Vishnu
पितृदोषशान्तिः
Tarpan, pinda daan and a havan offered in remembrance of three generations of forebears. Its subject is a debt of memory, kept the way the texts describe it.

A three-day rite performed on the Godavari at Trimbakeshwar for a death that was sudden or unwitnessed, or whose last rites were never completed.

We went to Trimbakeshwar for three mornings. Guruji had sent a written schedule with what to eat, what to wear and when to reach the kund each day, which removed all the guesswork. My uncle is seventy-four and could not stand for long stretches, so a stool was arranged without our having to ask twice. He explained the rite as something the shastra prescribes for the family to do together, and never framed it as a danger we were escaping.

I had read a lot of frightening things online before booking and Guruji was the first person to simply say what the classification means in the chart and what the traditional rite is. That alone was worth the call. The vidhi itself was done properly and the certificate names the gotra correctly. My only note is that the prasad courier took eleven days to reach Singapore.

Rites performed on your behalf in India are done at Trimbakeshwar Temple, Nashik. A Jyotirlinga at the foot of the Brahmagiri hill in Nashik district, beside the Kushavarta kund from which the Godavari is traditionally reckoned to rise. The black basalt temple standing today was built in the middle of the eighteenth century under the Peshwa Balaji Bajirao. The lingam here is unusual: three small faces set within a hollow, read in the local tradition as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Purohits of Trimbakeshwar are known across Maharashtra for the ancestral rites and dosha-shanti observances conducted on the Kushavarta ghat.
