Why this ritual

What the rite is for

Kaal Sarp is the name given to a single geometric fact about a chart: that all seven of the other grahas fall within the half of the zodiac bounded by Rahu at one end and Ketu at the other. Rahu and Ketu are the two lunar nodes, the points where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun, and the classical texts treat them as shadow grahas — chhaya grahas — associated with the unresolved, the inherited and the unfinished. When every other graha sits between them, the tradition reads the chart as concentrated rather than distributed: energy gathered on one side of an axis, with the qualities of the nodes coloured through it. It is worth saying plainly that this is a late classification. It is not found in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra or the older samhitas, it appears in regional handbooks of the last few centuries, and it became widely spoken of only in the twentieth century. Many careful jyotishis give it much less weight than popular writing does, and some do not use it at all. We say this because a devotee deserves to know where an idea comes from before deciding whether to keep an observance for it. What the rite itself contains is old and unambiguous: the worship of the nagas, which runs through the Vedic and puranic literature; the abhishek of Shiva, who is depicted with the serpent at his throat; the Sarpa Sukta and the Nag Gayatri; and the jaap of Rahu and Ketu in their traditional counts. Families keep it as a settling observance, often at a tirtha on the bank of a river, and that is how we offer it.

Textual basis

Where it comes from

Naga worship is among the oldest continuous strands of the tradition. The Sarpa Sukta of the Taittiriya Samhita, the sarpabali of the grihya rites, Naga Panchami in Shravana and the serpent shrines that stand under trees in almost every part of the subcontinent all belong to it, long predating the chart classification this rite is now named for. The observance as it is performed today combines that naga worship with a Rudrabhishek — milk, water, honey, curd and ghee poured over the linga with the Rudram — and with the jaap of the two nodes: oṃ bhrāṃ bhrīṃ bhrauṃ saḥ rāhave namaḥ, eighteen thousand for Rahu, and oṃ srāṃ srīṃ sraum saḥ ketave namaḥ, seven thousand for Ketu. Durva is the samidha for Rahu and kusha for Ketu; the grains are urad and kulattha. Trimbakeshwar in Nashik is the best known place for this and for the related Narayan Nagbali, and the Trimbakeshwar purohits keep their own detailed order of service, which our pandits there follow rather than substituting a generic one. Ujjain, Ranganathaswamy at Srirangam and several naga kshetras in the south are also used. Amavasya, Naga Panchami and Panchami tithi generally are the days customarily chosen.
