• Panditji reached our flat forty minutes before the muhurat and set the chowki up himself so nothing was rushed. He asked my father-in-law, who is eighty-two and cannot sit on the floor, whether he would prefer a low stool, and arranged one before the katha began. The sankalp was read slowly, and he paused after each name so we could repeat it. He explained why the katha is read in five parts before he started, which none of us had known.

• We wanted the path done in Bengali pronunciation and the purohit we were matched with reads it that way as a matter of course. A written schedule came two days ahead listing what we had to keep ready, down to the number of diyas. He corrected my son gently when he held the flowers wrongly, and did not make him feel small about it.

• The nama-akshara from our daughter’s nakshatra was sent to us a week in advance, with three name suggestions beginning with that syllable and a note that we were free to choose any name we liked. Shastri-ji kept the vidhi to just over an hour because there was a newborn in the room, and told us beforehand which portion he would shorten and why.

• Three muhurats were offered for the same week with the tithi and paksha written beside each, so we could pick the one that suited both sides of the family. Panditji walked the flat first and told us where the havan kund could safely go given our building rules. He carried his own fireproof mat, which the society office was relieved about.

• My father died in November and we could not travel for the annual shraddha. The tarpan was performed at Prayagraj on our behalf. My mother’s name, my father’s name and our gotra were all read in the sankalp, and the recording is clear enough that we could hear each one. The certificate names the purohit and the tithi it was performed on. The prasad reached New Jersey in nine days.

• Booked at Trimbakeshwar for my mother-in-law’s eightieth. The team asked how the name should be pronounced before the day rather than guessing, which mattered to us. The stream started on time at 06:00 IST, which is one in the morning here, and someone stayed on the chat the whole way through in case we lost the feed.
