Why this ritual
What the rite is for
Navagraha shanti is the most structured of the household fire rites, because everything in it is enumerated. There are nine positions on the vedi, and each has a fixed direction: Surya at the centre, Chandra to the south-east, Mangal to the south, and so on. Each graha has its own grain, its own cloth colour, its own metal, and its own samidha — arka for Surya, palash for Chandra, khadira for Mangal, apamarga for Budh, ashvattha for Guru, udumbara for Shukra, shami for Shani, durva for Rahu, kusha for Ketu. Each has a jaap count fixed by the older manuals: seven thousand for Surya, eleven for Chandra, ten for Mangal, nine for Budh, nineteen for Guru, sixteen for Shukra, twenty-three for Shani, eighteen for Rahu and seventeen for Ketu — one hundred and thirty thousand in all. The ahuti offered is one tenth of whatever count the sankalp names. A graha in Jyotish is a position, not a verdict, and a shanti rite is an act of attention paid to it. Nothing here is a promise about what a period will bring.
