Why this ritual

What the rite is for

Abhishek is the oldest way of worshipping the linga: not decoration but a continuous stream, poured while the Rudram is chanted, so that the sound and the pouring keep the same rhythm. The substances follow a fixed order, and each is followed by clean water before the next begins — water, milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar; then sugarcane juice, coconut water, sandal water, bhasma; and finally gangajal, after which the linga is dressed with bilva leaves, chandan and white flowers.

The text chanted over it is the Sri Rudram from the Krishna Yajurveda. Its first half, the Namakam, is eleven anuvakas of salutation, and the Panchakshari — Namah Shivaya — occurs within its eighth. The second half, the Chamakam, is eleven anuvakas of asking. A single recitation of both is one Rudri; eleven Rudri make an Ekadasha Rudri, and eleven of those a Laghu Rudra of a hundred and twenty-one, which is why the largest package lists eleven ritviks.

Households keep the abhishek on Mondays, on Pradosh — the trayodashi of either paksha — through the month of Shravan, and on Mahashivratri, when it is repeated in each of the four praharas of the night.

Textual basis

Where it comes from

The Sri Rudram is Taittiriya Samhita 4.5 and 4.7 of the Krishna Yajurveda, and is among the oldest liturgical texts still in daily use. The abhishek vidhi that surrounds it comes from the Rudrashtadhyayi in the north and from the Agama paddhatis in the south, which is why the order of substances differs slightly between a Kashi pandit and an Iyer. The Shiva Purana and the Linga Purana both describe the offering of bilva. In Maharashtra the abhishek is closely tied to Shravani Somvar; in Tamil Nadu it is done as Ekadasa Rudram at the temple; at Trimbakeshwar and Kashi Vishwanath it is offered daily for devotees who cannot attend.

Who performs it

Pandit requirement

A ritvik with the Sri Rudram by heart in his own shakha, able to keep the chant steady while the dhara continues. For an Ekadasha Rudri five chant in unison; for a Laghu Rudra eleven do, and the count of a hundred and twenty-one is divided so that each ritvik knows his own tally.
