Why this ritual
What the rite is for
The classical texts speak of three rinas that a householder carries: to the rishis, to the devas, and to the pitrs — the forebears of the line. The last of these is discharged not by payment but by remembrance: by shraddha kept at its season, by tarpan offered with water and sesame, and by seeing that the family observances are not left unperformed. Pitra dosha is the name given in the chart to a note about that remembrance. It is recorded from placements around the ninth bhava and its lord and from the Sun, which stands in this reading for the paternal line, and what it points to is an observance that has fallen out of practice rather than anything befalling anyone. That happens easily and without blame. Families move countries, elders pass in seasons when travel is impossible, a line of the family loses touch with the priest who kept its records, a generation grows up without being taught the vidhi. The shanti exists so that what was left undone can be done, plainly and in one sitting. There is nothing sorrowful required of you in it. Tarpan is offered with cool water and sesame, the pindas of rice and barley are made and given, the panchbali portions are set aside for the cow, the crow, the dog and the ant, brahmans are fed and daan is given, and the names of three generations on both sides are spoken aloud, which for many families is the part that matters most. People often come away from this rite quiet rather than unsettled. That is the shape it is meant to have.
