Overview

What this chart is built from

Your lagna is Kumbha and the Moon stood in Mesha, in Bharani. You are in the Rahu mahadasha, with Guru running as the antardasha until 2027-06-29. Your current period traditionally emphasises unfamiliar ground and foreign connections. What follows describes what classical Jyotish associates with these placements. It is an account of tradition, not a forecast.

Running until 2027-06-29.

You are in the Rahu mahadasha, with Guru running as the antardasha until 2027-06-29. Your current period traditionally emphasises unfamiliar ground and foreign connections.

The Vimshottari sequence is seeded from the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth — Bharani, whose lord is Shukra. Rahu is placed in Vrischika, bhava 10, which is what colours the period.

Traditional observances

What the texts attach to what is here

Each states why it was suggested and the placements it rests on.

  • Navagraha Shanti Havan

Your chart carries the Mangal Dosha classification. Tradition attaches a specific observance to it, which is what this rite is.

    Why this was suggested

    1. Mangal DoshaMars occupies house 1 from the lagna and house 11 from the Moon.
    2. Shani Sade SatiSaturn is currently transiting house 12 from the natal Moon, which is the rising phase.
    3. Rahu in bhava 10Rahu is debilitated in Vrischika, occupying the 10th bhava.
    4. Ketu in bhava 4Ketu is debilitated in Vrishabha, occupying the 4th bhava.
    5. Current dashaRahu mahadasha with Guru antardasha, running until 2027-06-29.

The vedi layout, the woods and the jaap counts follow the Shanti and Graha-yajna sections of the grihya manuals as they are compiled in the Nirnaya Sindhu and the Dharmasindhu, and as they are printed in the Karmakanda paddhatis most pandits work from today. Regional practice varies in detail: Maharashtrian paddhati places Shani's samidha differently from Maithil, and southern Smarta practice adds the adhidevata and pratyadhidevata puja at greater length. The rite is prescribed at the start of a mahadasha or antardasha, before a long journey or a move, and as the shanti portion of griha pravesh and vivaah.

    • Recite the Rahu mantra on Saturday, which is the day traditionally kept for it.
    • Recite the Ketu mantra on Tuesday, which is the day traditionally kept for it.
    • Offer water at sunrise and keep the observance simple and regular. Consistency matters more than scale.
  • Vastu Shanti Havan

Rahu is placed weakly in a bhava that classical texts treat as consequential. Observances for Rahu are the customary response.

    Why this was suggested

    1. Rahu in bhava 10Rahu is debilitated in Vrischika, occupying the 10th bhava.
    2. Ketu in bhava 4Ketu is debilitated in Vrishabha, occupying the 4th bhava.

The mandala and its devatas are set out in the Mayamata and the Manasara, and the shanti homa that accompanies it follows the Grihya paddhati for any pratishtha — punyahavachan, kalash sthapana, matrika and navagraha sthapana, then the vastu ahuti and purnahuti. Regional practice differs on whether the rite precedes griha pravesh or is folded into it on the same morning, and on whether a kalash is buried at the brahmasthana. In the south the corresponding observance is generally performed as part of the grihapravesham itself. Your pandit follows the paddhati of your family.

Naga worship is among the oldest continuous strands of the tradition. The Sarpa Sukta of the Taittiriya Samhita, the sarpabali of the grihya rites, Naga Panchami in Shravana and the serpent shrines that stand under trees in almost every part of the subcontinent all belong to it, long predating the chart classification this rite is now named for. The observance as it is performed today combines that naga worship with a Rudrabhishek — milk, water, honey, curd and ghee poured over the linga with the Rudram — and with the jaap of the two nodes: oṃ bhrāṃ bhrīṃ bhrauṃ saḥ rāhave namaḥ, eighteen thousand for Rahu, and oṃ srāṃ srīṃ sraum saḥ ketave namaḥ, seven thousand for Ketu. Durva is the samidha for Rahu and kusha for Ketu; the grains are urad and kulattha. Trimbakeshwar in Nashik is the best known place for this and for the related Narayan Nagbali, and the Trimbakeshwar purohits keep their own detailed order of service, which our pandits there follow rather than substituting a generic one. Ujjain, Ranganathaswamy at Srirangam and several naga kshetras in the south are also used. Amavasya, Naga Panchami and Panchami tithi generally are the days customarily chosen.

The vidhi is described in the Garuda Purana, which sets out both Narayan Bali and Nagbali and the conditions under which each is prescribed. Trimbakeshwar in Nashik district is the customary place: the Godavari rises there, the Kushavarta kund is the tirtha for the tarpan, and the priesthood of the town has performed this rite continuously for generations. Some families instead keep it at Gaya, at Chandod on the Narmada in Gujarat, or at Rameswaram. Pitra dosha, in the classical texts, is simply the term for a shraddha obligation that stands unmet in a family line — a classification, not a misfortune — and this rite is one of the traditional ways of meeting it.
