Why this ritual

What the rite is for

The vastu purusha mandala is a square grid laid over the plan of a dwelling, with a presiding figure imagined lying across it and a devata assigned to each cell. The rite names those devatas one by one and offers to them, beginning at the north-east and closing at the brahmasthana, the open centre. In practice the pandit walks the house before the fire is lit: he looks at where the entrance falls, where the kitchen and the water are, and where the heaviest walls sit, and the sankalp is composed to name the plot, the structure and the family that will live in it. Where a feature sits awkwardly against the classical scheme, the tradition does not ask you to move a wall. It asks for the observance, and for the house to be occupied with attention rather than in haste. Nothing here is a claim about what a building will do to the people inside it.

Textual basis

Where it comes from

The mandala and its devatas are set out in the Mayamata and the Manasara, and the shanti homa that accompanies it follows the Grihya paddhati for any pratishtha — punyahavachan, kalash sthapana, matrika and navagraha sthapana, then the vastu ahuti and purnahuti. Regional practice differs on whether the rite precedes griha pravesh or is folded into it on the same morning, and on whether a kalash is buried at the brahmasthana. In the south the corresponding observance is generally performed as part of the grihapravesham itself. Your pandit follows the paddhati of your family.
