Pandit
Bengali Smarta tradition, Shukla Yajurveda, Madhyandina shakha; Bengali Smarta paddhati. He has practised in Kolkata for 28 years.
The person
A fourth-generation purohit from a Bhattacharya family in Bhowanipore, he learnt the Bengali Smarta paddhati from his grandfather and later took formal training in the Durga Saptashati at a chatuspathi in Nabadwip. He is best known for Chandi Havan and for the Saptashati path through Navaratri, read in the Bengali intonation families recognise from their own homes. Bengali households in London and Toronto book him for Annaprashan and for the Lakshmi puja on Kojagari, and he paces the vidhi so that grandparents watching on the call can follow every step. He writes out the sankalp in Bengali and Roman script beforehand for children who are asked to repeat it.
Where he stands
The school a pandit belongs to and the shakha he was trained in decide the order of the vidhi and the sound of the recitation. Both are stated rather than assumed.
Sampradaya
Bengali Smarta
Bengali Smarta practice, ordered by Raghunandana’s digests rather than by the northern grihya manuals. The Durga, Kali and Saraswati pujas and the Bengali samskaras follow this line.
Lineage
Shukla Yajurveda, Madhyandina shakha; Bengali Smarta paddhati
This lineage was confirmed in writing by his pathashala and vouched for by senior purohits who have practised alongside him. What was examined, and on what date, is set out under Verification.
Verification
Each check below was carried out by our team against a document or a person who could confirm it. A check is dated because a check from three years ago is a different claim from one made last month.
Aadhaar, PAN and a West Bengal voter card were checked against his bank account name, and a live video selfie was matched to the documents.
30 Sept 2025
The Nabadwip chatuspathi produced its enrolment register showing his four years of study, and a senior purohit of the same Bhattacharya line confirmed the family paddhati he follows.
12 Oct 2025
He read the Argala, Kilaka and Devi Kavacham and the first charitra of the Saptashati before a two-member panel, which checked the Bengali recitation convention and the correct nyasa order.
28 Oct 2025
A rehearsal stream from his Bhowanipore puja room was reviewed for framing on the ghat sthapana, audio clarity over the dhak, and a stable 4 Mbps uplink held for one hour.
15 Dec 2025
The Dakshineswar Kali temple office confirmed that he is on its list of purohits permitted to conduct sponsored pujas on behalf of devotees; the letter is on file with us.
6 Jan 2026
Police verification from Kolkata Police dated 8 February 2026, and references from a Bhowanipore family and a Salt Lake family he has served for fifteen and nine years respectively.

Expertise
Specialities are the families of rite he has trained and practised in, not everything the catalogue offers.
Languages
The mantras themselves are recited in Sanskrit whoever performs them. What the list above changes is the language the sankalp is taken in, and the language the rite is explained in as it proceeds — which is the part a family follows.
Rites
Each one states its vidhi, its samagri and what differs between tiers before you commit to anything.
Vishnu
श्री सत्यनारायण व्रत कथा
A household vrat kept most often on Purnima or a sankranti, in which the sankalp is taken first and the katha is then read aloud in five chapters before the family.
Lakshmi
नित्य लक्ष्मी अर्चना
A short daily rite — the Sri Suktam, the hundred and eight names with kumkum, and a lamp lit at the threshold at dusk.
Ganesha
नामकरण संस्कार
Performed on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth. The child is shown the sun, the janma nakshatra gives the first syllable, and the name is spoken into the ear before it is announced.
Durga
दुर्गासप्तशती
Seven hundred verses across thirteen chapters, from the Markandeya Purana, recited in three charitras with the Navarna mantra.
Ganesha
अन्नप्राशन संस्कार
The first solid food, given between the sixth and eighth month. Kheer is offered to the deity, then placed on the child's tongue by an elder.
Durga
चण्डी होम
The seven hundred verses of the Durga Saptashati are recited and offered into fire. Families keep it at Navratri, and at thresholds where a household wants to act together.
Vishnu
श्राद्ध तर्पण
The rite kept for a departed parent or elder on the tithi of their passing — pind daan, tarpan of water and black til, and a meal offered in their name.

Durga Saptashati Path
At a Temple in India

My mother-in-law in Kolkata could not travel this year, so we sponsored the path and she watched from her flat while we watched from London. Debasish da read the whole thing in the tone she grew up with. She cried at the Kavacham. The recording is with us now and she asks for it every week.

He came home for our son's annaprashan. Thirty-odd relatives, a lot of noise, and he still kept everything in order without raising his voice once. He wrote out the sankalp for my father in both Bengali and English letters so he would not stumble. Small thing, but nobody has done that for us before.

We did a small havan in our basement with him on the call. He asked to see the room on video first and told us to move the kund away from the smoke alarm, which we would never have thought of. He also said clearly that if the building did not allow fire we could do the path instead. Honest man.

For my mother's first annual shraddha. He arrived early, sat with my father for twenty minutes before starting, and explained what each offering stood for. Nothing was made to feel ominous. The whole thing took just over two hours and he refused the extra amount we offered.

Rites performed on your behalf in India are done at Dakshineswar Kali Temple, Kolkata. Built in 1855 on the eastern bank of the Hooghly by Rani Rashmoni of Janbazar, in the nine-spired navaratna style of Bengal. The presiding image is Bhavatarini, a form of Kali, standing on a silver lotus. Twelve identical Shiva shrines face the river along the courtyard, with a Radha-Krishna temple to the north. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa served as priest here for much of his life, and the temple remains one of Bengal’s principal centres of Shakta worship.
