The person
He studied at a Sanskrit tol in Puri and has assisted at the Sangam ghats in Prayagraj during every Magh Mela since 2012. Odia families know him for Satyanarayan Katha and for tarpan; when a family books a Shraddha he travels to Prayagraj so that the rite is done at the Sangam itself rather than by proxy elsewhere. Bengali comes easily to him, which suits the many Kolkata-rooted families who now book him from Dubai and Melbourne. He is the youngest purohit in this cohort and says so himself when a family asks about his years.

The school a pandit belongs to and the shakha he was trained in decide the order of the vidhi and the sound of the recitation. Both are stated rather than assumed.

Worship centred on Vishnu and his avataras. The tulsi offering, the Satyanarayan katha and the Vishnu Sahasranama sit at the centre of practice, and the samskaras follow the Vaishnava order.

His Puri tol produced its attendance register for six years of study, and his teacher confirmed in a signed note the Utkala Vaishnava paddhati in which he was trained.

He read the full Satyanarayan Katha with all five adhyayas and the tarpan sankalp before a two-member panel, which assessed pronunciation and the correct order of the pitru, deva and rishi tarpan.

A household vrat kept most often on Purnima or a sankranti, in which the sankalp is taken first and the katha is then read aloud in five chapters before the family.
Lakshmi

A short daily rite — the Sri Suktam, the hundred and eight names with kumkum, and a lamp lit at the threshold at dusk.
Vishnu
विष्णुसहस्रनाम
The thousand names of Vishnu from the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata, recited with tulsi archana on Ekadashi and Saturdays.
Ganesha
अन्नप्राशन संस्कार
The first solid food, given between the sixth and eighth month. Kheer is offered to the deity, then placed on the child's tongue by an elder.
Vishnu
श्राद्ध तर्पण
The rite kept for a departed parent or elder on the tithi of their passing — pind daan, tarpan of water and black til, and a meal offered in their name.
Ganesha
चूडाकर्म संस्कार
The eighth of the sixteen samskaras. The child’s first hair is offered, and the family gathers to mark that infancy has passed.
Vishnu
नारायण बलि
A three-day rite performed on the Godavari at Trimbakeshwar for a death that was sudden or unwitnessed, or whose last rites were never completed.

We call him every Purnima now. He reads the katha in Odia and keeps the pace slow enough for the children in the room to sit through it, which no one else managed. He brings his own asana and clears up afterwards without being asked.

Good with a frightened two-year-old. He paused twice when my son started crying instead of pushing on, and finished the sankalp only when the child had settled. He arrived twenty minutes late because of traffic from Puri, which he called ahead to tell us.

Rites performed on your behalf in India are done at Triveni Sangam, Prayagraj, Prayagraj. The confluence of the Ganga and the Yamuna at Prayagraj, joined in tradition by the unseen Saraswati. It is a tirtha rather than a walled temple: rites are performed on boats and on the sand flats, below the fort Akbar built here in 1583, with the Bade Hanuman shrine and the Adi Venimadhav shrine close at hand. The Magh Mela is held on these flats each winter and the Kumbh in its longer cycle. Prayagwal purohits have kept the pilgrim registers and the tarpan tradition of the sangam across many generations.
