The person
He learnt the Taittiriya samhita at a Veda pathashala near Kanchipuram and served for many years within the Pancharatra order followed at Srirangam before moving to Chennai. Tamil families come to him for Vishnu Sahasranama jaap and for the remembrance rites — Narayan Bali and the annual Shraddha — which he conducts with unusual patience and never abridges. He has guided families in New Jersey and London through rituals performed in their own homes for close to fifteen years, and prepares a written samagri list in English so that nothing has to be improvised on the day. He is unhurried on the phone beforehand, and answers questions about the vidhi rather than deflecting them.
Where he stands
The school a pandit belongs to and the shakha he was trained in decide the order of the vidhi and the sound of the recitation. Both are stated rather than assumed.

Vishnu
विष्णुसहस्रनाम
The thousand names of Vishnu from the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata, recited with tulsi archana on Ekadashi and Saturdays.
Ganesha
नामकरण संस्कार
Performed on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth. The child is shown the sun, the janma nakshatra gives the first syllable, and the name is spoken into the ear before it is announced.
Vishnu
श्राद्ध तर्पण
The rite kept for a departed parent or elder on the tithi of their passing — pind daan, tarpan of water and black til, and a meal offered in their name.
Vishnu
नारायण बलि
A three-day rite performed on the Godavari at Trimbakeshwar for a death that was sudden or unwitnessed, or whose last rites were never completed.

This was for my elder brother, who died abroad and whose rites we had not been able to complete. Acharya explained on the phone beforehand exactly which portions apply in such a case and which do not. He did not hurry any part of it. Watching from Edison at three in the morning, I felt we had finally done what was owed.

Rites performed on your behalf in India are done at Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple, Tiruchirappalli. The foremost of the 108 Divya Desams, on an island between the Kaveri and the Kollidam near Tiruchirappalli. Ranganatha is worshipped here in a reclining form, with Ranganayaki in her own shrine. The complex covers roughly 156 acres within seven concentric enclosures and twenty-one gopurams; the Rajagopuram, about 72 metres tall, was completed in 1987. The temple was sung by the Alvars in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham and endowed in turn by Chola, Pandya, Hoysala and Vijayanagara rulers. Its liturgy follows the Sri Vaishnava Pancharatra order.
