What is in your parcel

  • Bhasma from the havan kund, in a sealed and labelled tin
  • A small iron piece from the daan, wrapped in the indigo cloth offered at the vedi
  • Black sesame from the ahutis, in a sealed sachet declared on the manifest
  • Red cotton mauli thread, cut from the length used at the kund
  • The printed certificate and the sankalp sheet with the names as they were read aloud
A small parcel wrapped in unbleached cloth and tied with raw thread on a wooden counter, a printed manifest slip and a customs declaration taped to the top.

Canada

What could not cross the border

Some items cannot be shipped across every border. Anything restricted for your destination has been left out, and is listed here.

  • the til oil offered at the shila. Loose oil is not accepted by air freight on this route, so it was left at the temple and a sealed tin of dry bhasma was packed in its place. Photograph two shows the oil on the platform.

  • the fresh marigold garland from the vedi. Untreated plant material is not permitted into Canada by post, so it was offered at the temple and stayed there. It appears in photograph one.

Afterwards

Caring for prasad

Prasad is consecrated. If it cannot be consumed, it is customarily returned to flowing water or clean earth rather than discarded.

By custom the cloth, the thread and the sealed tin are kept rather than returned; it is the edible prasad, and anything that has spoiled, that goes to flowing water or to clean earth. There is no fixed hour for it and no wrong day.
