Why this ritual

What the rite is for

A place of work is treated in this vidhi as a household of its own — it is swept, washed, marked at the threshold, and only then opened. Ganesha is invoked first, as at the start of any undertaking. Lakshmi is invited to the gaddi and the cash box, Saraswati to the ledger and the tools, because the tradition holds skill and sustenance to be two halves of the same work. The sankalp is spoken aloud in the owner's name and gotra, and it names the trade plainly: what will be made, or sold, or repaired here. Nothing in the rite is a forecast. It is a beginning made deliberately, in front of the people who will work in the room, so that the first act performed there is one of intention rather than hurry.

Textual basis

Where it comes from

The sequence follows the Grihya paddhati used for any pratishtha of a new space — punyahavachan, kalash sthapana, matrika and navagraha sthapana, then the deity puja and a short havan. The gaddi pujan and bahi-khata pujan are mercantile customs of north and western India, best known from the Marwari, Agrawal and Gujarati vanik households, and they are also what Chopda Pujan does at Diwali. In the south the same intention is carried by the pujan of the tools and the weighing scale. Regional families keep their own order; the pandit is briefed on your paddhati before the day.

  • Turmeric powder

    100 g

    Used in the vastu shuddhi water and to mark the threshold. Turmeric is the standard auspicious pigment of every grihya rite.

  • Roli (kumkum)

    50 g

    For the tilak on the gaddi, the ledger and the tools, and for drawing the matrika lines.

  • Akshat (unbroken rice)

    500 g

    Offered at almost every step and used as the bed for the kalash. The grain must be whole, which is what the word akshat means.

  • Whole supari

    11 piece

    Wrapped in mauli, a supari stands in for a deity where no image is used, and one is placed inside the kalash.

  • Coconut with husk

    2 piece

    One crowns the kalash; the second, wrapped in cloth with betel and fruit, is the purnahuti offering.

  • Mango leaves

    1 bundle

    Five or seven leaves ring the mouth of the kalash, and the rest are strung with marigold into the doorway toran.

  • Copper kalash

    1 piece

    Copper is preferred over steel for the sthapana. The same kalash is normally kept at the premises afterwards.

    Mango is the default wood for a household havan — it burns clean and holds a low, steady flame in a small kunda.

Pandit requirement
