Why this ritual
What the rite is for
Mangal dosha, also called Kuja dosha and in ordinary speech manglik, is a classification and nothing more than that. It is recorded when Mars occupies the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth bhava, counted from the lagna, and in several schools also from the Moon or from Venus. Mars is the karaka of energy, initiative, courage and heat, and the classification simply notes that this energy sits in a house the matching texts pay attention to. It is common — a substantial share of charts carry it under one reckoning or another — and the same texts that name it also list a long set of parihara, conditions under which the classification is held to be cancelled: Mars in its own sign or exalted, both charts carrying the placement, Mars aspected by Jupiter, and several more, which is why an experienced jyotishi reads the whole chart before saying anything at all about it. What the tradition attaches to this placement is an observance, not an alarm. The Mangal shanti is performed to hold attention on the qualities Mars signifies and on their tempering: to meet a strong temperament with patience, to let heat become steadiness, to give the energy somewhere useful to go. Hanuman is worshipped alongside Mars in most north Indian lineages for exactly this reason, and Tuesday is the day kept. Nothing in this rite is about warding anything off. It is about the conduct that the placement asks a person to practise.
