Why this ritual

What the rite is for

The mantra is a single verse — Rigveda 7.59.12, repeated in the Yajurveda — addressed to Tryambaka, the three-eyed one, asking to be released as a ripe cucumber is released from its stem. It is among the oldest continuously recited verses in the tradition, and families turn to it at exactly the moments when there is little else to be done: an illness that is being treated, a recovery that is slow, an elderly parent, a long stretch of difficulty. The rite is a jaap with ahuti — the verse is recited a declared number of times, and offerings are made into the fire on each count or on each tenth. What the observance offers is a way for a family to act together, with attention, over several hours. It is not a treatment and it is not offered in place of one. If someone is unwell, they should be under a doctor’s care, and the pandits who perform this rite will say the same.

Textual basis

Where it comes from

The verse is Rigveda 7.59.12 and recurs at Vajasaneyi Samhita 3.60. The classical anushthan is a sava lakh — one hundred and twenty-five thousand recitations — with ahuti at every tenth, completed over several days by a group of ritviks; shorter observances of eleven thousand and fifty-one thousand are the common household forms. The Rudram is often recited alongside, and in many families the rite is accompanied by an abhishek of the linga. Practice differs on whether ahuti is offered on every recitation or every tenth; your pandit will state which he follows before the sankalp is spoken.
