Why this ritual
What the rite is for
The tradition distinguishes the two presences carefully, and the vidhi keeps that distinction. Lakshmi is Shri — sustenance, dignity, the grace by which a household is held together — and she is worshipped at the seat, facing east. Kubera is the yaksha king of Alaka, keeper of the nidhis, and he is invoked in the north, which is his direction, on a copper yantra placed near the safe or the ledger. The Shri Suktam from the khila of the Rigveda is recited for the first, the Kubera mantra of the Vaishravana form for the second. Between them the rite says something simple and old: that what sustains a house is one thing, and what is stored in it is another, and both should be treated with care rather than anxiety.

100 gThe lotus is Lakshmi's own seat, so its seed is her customary offering. Some are placed in the safe at the end of the rite.
Included in the kit
Lotus flowers
5 pieceOffered at the pushpa upachar. Where lotus is out of season, red hibiscus or marigold is used and the substitution is stated in the sankalp.
Cowrie shells
11 pieceAn old token of exchange kept in the puja thali and afterwards in the cash box. It marks the drawer as a place of account, not of hoarding.
Included in the kit
Copper Kubera yantra
1 pieceKubera is invoked on the yantra rather than on an image. Copper is used because it is the metal prescribed for northern sthapana.
Included in the kit
Five-wick brass lamp
1 pieceLit with cow ghee for the deep daan. Five wicks are the customary count for Lakshmi pujan in most paddhatis.
Saffron
2 gMixed into the gandha and used to write Shri on the ledger or the first invoice.
Batasha & kheel
500 gThe naivedya of Lakshmi pujan in north India, and the prasad distributed afterwards.
Silver coin
1 pieceBathed in panchamrit during the snana upachar and then kept in the safe. Any old family coin may be used in place of a new one.
Red cloth asana
1 pieceSpread beneath the chowki on which Lakshmi is seated. Red is the customary colour for this pujan.
Panchamrit set
1 pieceFor the snana upachar of Lakshmi, the coin and the yantra. Mixed fresh on the morning of the puja.
